What does the value in the item list mean?

Every number in the table is the item's base value in the game, not the price you will see on the counter. The final price moves with several things:

  • Difficulty. Retail prices get +20% on Price Gouge and +15% on Mark Up, and nothing extra on Thin Margins or Red Ink.
  • Contraband tier. Contraband sells for more, and you also buy it cheaper.
  • Condition and grade. Chemistry products are graded by purity, water by grade, wine by quality, and some items have conditions that add or subtract value. The chemist guide shows how far purity alone moves a price.
  • Haggling. The deal you strike with each customer.

Use base value to compare items with each other and to judge whether an offer is reasonable. Stolen goods also take their starting Heat from their base value, so a cheap item may not count as stolen at all.

What do the contraband tiers mean?

Items are Legal or one of four contraband tiers. Higher tiers pay more and cost more when an inspector finds them:

TierSale markupIf an inspector finds it
Low+35%A warning
Mid+70%Confiscated
High+100%Confiscated and fined
Critical+150%You are arrested

Inspectors always find contraband unless it is hidden or locked away. The contraband, Heat and inspection guide covers hiding spots, bribes and how stolen goods differ.

What does the size column mean?

Size is the item's footprint in inventory cells, width by height. Storage bays, containers and your counter are grids, so size decides how much you can carry and display. Some items are not full rectangles — a long gun has a notch, for example — and the single-item page draws the exact shape.

Where does this data come from?

All values, tiers, sizes and names are the real in-game data of game version 1.0.0.6, not copied from other guides. Each item page also lists where the item comes from: which customers bring it, whether Dr. Jackson or the Commissary stocks it, and whether it turns up while scavenging. Only items that are in use and have a name and a value are listed. Back to the Probably Stolen wiki.

FAQ

Is the value in the item list what an item sells for?

No. It is the item's real base value in the game. The price you get also depends on your difficulty's retail markup, the item's contraband tier, its condition or grade, and how the haggling goes.

What does the contraband tier of an item mean?

It sets both the reward and the risk. Low, Mid, High and Critical contraband sell for 35%, 70%, 100% and 150% more, but an inspector always finds contraband that is not hidden, and Critical contraband gets you arrested.

What does the size column mean?

It is the item's footprint in inventory cells, width by height. Some items are not full rectangles, so the actual shape can take fewer cells than the size suggests.

Which version of the game is the item list from?

Version 1.0.0.6. The data is the game's actual real data, so values that change in a later patch will be updated with the new version.
